“How to make the whole web more readable and especially, more rewritable?”: this question is the starting point of our history.
Slice Factory’s history started in late 2007 in the so called “French Silicon Valley” at Sophia Antipolis with one man devoted to answer that question.
The founder of Slice Factory, the “Web Alchemist” (that’s how we’ll call him since he is a discreet person), began developing a few mashup applications allowing users bringing together web content from multiples sources, with a particular focus on pushing forward the boundaries of “client side cross domain communication”.
Indeed, in today’s mashup environment, information is the core value but its sourcing remains rather limited to third party sourcing tools (API’s and Webservices), web feeds (ATOM, RSS), Flash or Javascript widgets and some power-users oriented webscrapping tools (Openkapow, Dapper).
Several technology limits hinder nowadays mash-up development. In particular, browser’s “same origin policy” that restricts applications to load a page from a different server than the one where the application resides – thus obliging developers to heavy server-side development.
But wait: isn’t it the point of mashups, i.e. “combining content from more than one source into an integrated experience” ( Wikipedia Definition)?
Slice Factory’s ambition is to enable a brand new information consumption model combining a wide variety of sources (not just websites providing API’s) and simplicity in assembling for all users. Our paradigm favours “cut & paste” and “point & click” versus complex programming code.
Behind this tech-savvy web 2.0 vocabulary, our R&D team’s challenge is to enable anyone to “rethink the web” they would like to be. Our current researches scenarios are including for example new ways of:
- cutting & pasting any piece of a website or webpage on any other webpage to create a “real time and personalized webpage”
- creating your own dynamic applications such as “price comparison website” or “real-estate search engine”
- redesigning the style of any webpage
So, we guess you’re now wondering how to get this come to reality? While we’re still in tle middle of research and development on our core ” patent pending” secure client-side cross-domain communication technology , we are planning to provide a web platform to facilitate creating and sharing mashup applications through easy to use tools and solutions adapted to everyone’s need. So, whether you are an average user, power-user or developers, we warmly invite you to keep an eye on this blog and watch our shortcoming announcement on the release of the Slice Factory Platform.
Welcome to Slice Factory. Welcome to a new Web.
